First Presidency Statement on Haiti

The First Presidency of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints issued the following statement today:

Our hearts are filled with sadness as we have watched the suffering in Haiti in the wake of the devastating earthquake. We turn to the example of Jesus Christ who reached out to “lift up the hands which hang down” and “strengthen the feeble knees.” We are keenly aware that many in America are dealing with economic challenges caused by the recession. However, we are appealing to members to donate to Church Humanitarian Services as their means allow in order to help our Haitian brothers and sisters. Many have already contributed and others are anxious to do so.

Money is not the only need in Haiti. People are frightened, bewildered, and wholly uncertain about their future. In addition to what people can do in helping with food, water and shelter, there needs to be a calming influence over that troubled nation. We invite our people everywhere to supplicate God for a spirit of calm and peace among the people as urgent aid and reconstruction efforts continue.

Church members and others wishing to contribute to the aid efforts may do so by using the Donation Slip they normally use for Church donations or by logging onto lds.org and clicking on Humanitarian Services Emergency Response.

New Years Resolution

I want to be better at reading my scriptures and saying my prayers. I'm going to mark on my calendar the days that I remembered to read and say my prayers and at the end of the month if I've done better than 60% (or 80% or 90% later on in the year) then I will reward myself with going out to dinner or to see a movie.

New Years Resolution

*to lose 30 lbs.

-i am signing up for an exercise class with a friend and marking on my calendar when i exercise

*to become a better cook

- i am trying a recipe i have never tried before once a week

*to read my scriptures everyday

- i am also marking this on my calendar every time i read my scriptures

Challenge for January

How many times have you made a new years resolution, written it down, just to find that same piece of paper in December...under a pile of papers knowing that you haven't done anything to accomplish it?

The easiest way to get something done is to make a plan.

The challenge for January is:
-Make a new years resolution, and a plan of how you are going to accomplish it.
-Submit your resolution and plan to byu.85.mission@gmail.com to share with the community.

We wish you all the best in 2010.

New Year Resolutions

Going into a new year, it's easy to make resolutions that are too tough on yourself — and hardly realistic.

However, there are many practical goals that you can aim for in a new year that not only are beneficial to you, but also to others.

Members of the faith community — Christians, Hindus, Muslims and others — gave their suggestions going into 2010. They're compiled in a list of 12, maybe one to shoot for each month.

1. Memorize a song
2. Slow down
3. Cut down on waste
4. Forgive others
5. Love others
6. Repay kindness
7. Touch a life
8. Feed the hungry
9. Remember the ill
10. Be humble
11. Look past daily grind
12. Have faith like a child
